Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Young people will know when their wisdom teeth start coming in. They will feel a slight pain from them erupting through the gums. This starts happening sometime after age 18 but can happen in their 20s and up to age 30. Most people will need to get their wisdom teeth extracted.

Why Wisdom Teeth Are Pulled

Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled

The common reason wisdom teeth are pulled is that modern mouths are too small for them. They crowd out other teeth and cause misalignment. Plus, we don't need them with modern diets. Wisdom teeth can cause more problems than they should so getting them pulled is usually the best approach.

Four wisdom teeth will come in but they probably won't all erupt at the same time. That means you may have four trips to the dentist, although dentists can pull two at a time if they are growing on the same side.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

People can have impacted wisdom teeth. These are teeth that are growing abnormally. They may be lying down on top of the gum, growing sideways, or growing into the back of the jaw. These need to be pulled and will require an oral surgeon since it is a more complicated procedure.

Pulling Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth extraction is usually simple. It involves administering a local anesthetic to numb the area and the extraction can be done in 10 minutes afterward. You will need some pain relieving medicine for when the medicine wears off and your dentist may give you an antibiotic to prevent infection.
