How do traditional braces work?
Metal braces consist of stainless-steel brackets bonded to your teeth. They are connected by arch-wires that apply consistent pressure. Elastic bands increase the pressure. Teeth shift over time as an orthodontist makes adjustments.
Do metal braces hurt?
You’ll have some soreness for a few days after they are installed and after each adjustment. Over-the-counter pain relievers can remedy discomfort.
How long do I have to wear metal braces?
Treatment times vary but most wear them for about 18 to 24 months.
Am I too old for metal braces?
There is no age limit. Adults can definitely get metal braces.
What are diet restrictions with metal braces?
You should avoid hard, crunchy, sticky and chewy foods. Popcorn, nuts, and caramel are off the list because they can damage the wires and brackets.
How do I take care of my teeth while wearing metal braces?
You’ll need extra oral-hygiene time and effort because brushing and flossing around braces can be a challenge. You will still need to brush twice daily and floss at least once a day. You will still need to see your regular dentist as well as your orthodontist.
Will I still need regular dental check-ups with braces?
Yes, you will need to continue with regular check-ups from your family dentist and still go to orthodontic visits.
What happens after the braces come off? Do I need something else?
You will be given a retainer to wear after the braces come off. It is usually worn at night to keep your teeth from shifting back.
